Tips and Info on Touchless Infrared Thermometers
Because of the need for safety and prevention, infrared or touchless thermometers have become standard equipment in many homes, schools, child care programs, and businesses. They work by sensing and measuring the heat emitted by the body and they are safe and effective for use with children.
Here are some tips from our Nurses:
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for thermometer use and cleaning guidelines.
Hold the thermometer directly perpendicular to the forehead and at the recommended distance.
Make sure the body surface is clean, dry, and unobstructed. If the body surface is overheated from being in a warm car or from vigorous activity, allow the individual to cool down for 10 minutes before taking their temperature.
Be sure the thermometer is out of direct sunlight or drafts. Thermometers can not detect temperatures through glass, liquid, or plastic.
Ten minutes prior to use, leave the thermometer in the environment where you are using it.
Make sure the batteries are working well.
NYSDOH recommends that during COVID–19, anyone with a temperature of 100 or greater should not be in a child care program.
