Why Epinephrine Is Important
Nearly 1 in 13 children in the United States have a food allergy. Recognizing and responding to an allergic reaction to food is critical in child care.
Epinephrine is the first-line drug of choice for the emergency treatment of severe allergic reactions. It is a safe medication. There is no medical reason for trained, designated staff to withhold the administration of an auto-injector in an emergency if anaphylaxis is suspected.
Anaphylaxis can be life threatening!! If in doubt – give epinephrine.
An unnecessary dose may cause a racing heart and an increase in blood pressure, but epinephrine is metabolized (broken down) in the body quickly so the effects don’t last long, and you may save a life.
