Creating Breastfeeding Friendly Communities

Protecting, promoting, and supporting breastfeeding efforts has been a long-standing and important health objective in New York State. For the last four years, Brightside Up has been part of a multi-sector and collaborative initiative to build upon these efforts called Creating Breastfeeding Friendly Communities (CBFC).

Only a handful of organizations were chosen to take part in the CBFC grant which makes the work that much more meaningful. While there are many facets to the grant, our role has been to increase the number of child care centers and homes that achieve the NYS Child and Adult Care Food Program Breastfeeding-Friendly designation.

Through CBFC, grantees* receive financial assistance with affording items such as a glider chair, and resources like children’s books and educational materials for families. In addition, they also get assistance with policy development and free training on infant feeding.

Working on the CBFC grant has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my job. Every program has different needs and challenges, therefore, there isn’t one correct way to set up a breastfeeding-friendly program. I love seeing a provider’s face light up when they talk about their vision for a lactation space and how they can’t wait for their breastfeeding moms to see it when it’s done. It’s the outpouring of this positive energy from making those dreams a reality that truly inspires me to continue moving forward.
